Wayne Butterfield, Founder and Global Thought Leader at STX.AI, has been recognized as a Marquis Emerging Leader for their contributions and achievements in the field of artificial intelligence.

Born in Leeds, England, Mr. Butterfield began working at 16 to help his family through financial difficulties, serving as an office junior at a law firm while still in high school. Despite only being a high school graduate, his demeanor, “self-made” experience, authenticity, and ability to deliver results made it clear he was much more than his educational background suggested. His career really began, though, at Telefonica UK Limited, a predominant British telecommunications service provider now doing business as O2 UK, beginning in 2006. Here, he advanced from junior positions to managerial roles, serving as a credit and revenue assurance manager, a back office-sourcing manager, and ultimately Head of RPA, or Robotic Process Automation, the latter of which allowed him to deploy cutting-edge technology now widely used in organizations globally, an experience that fostered a consistency in driving change and improving efficiency. At that time, very few people worldwide were deploying this technology alongside what is now called Conversational AI.

That year, 2010, marked an “aha” moment for Mr. Butterfield, who saw technology advance from being very IT-centric toward no-code and low-code situations. From that point on, utilizing his operational background, he began the journey of integrating AI into operations rather than simply deploying it from a technical standpoint. As a testament to his impact, he was showcased on stages around the globe, particularly in Europe and the United States, in 2012 and 2013. These honors highlighted his work at Telefonica UK Limited, particularly the fact that he saved approximately 250 FTE (full-time equivalent) worth of work. The FTEs were re-purposed to focus on digital messaging and chat. During this time, he and his team developed one of the world’s largest online messaging capabilities, processing 1.2 million transactions a month using RPA and deploying one of Europe’s first virtual agents. Simultaneously, there was significant growth in the iPhone, the App Store, and mobile applications, contributing to the rise of digital services and self-service options, a melting pot of innovation that he was at the center of—transforming from an operational leader into a strategic thinker and deliverer.

In the field of artificial intelligence, Mr. Butterfield has always had a “human-first” outlook, which he brought to subsequent roles as Head of Digital Innovation and Transformation at Telefónica, S.A. and General Manager of Digital Care at British Telecommunications plc, between 2014 and 2016. He later joined ISG, a global AI-centered technology research and IT advisory firm, where he excelled as Global Head of Intelligent Automation Solutions and as a partner within its AI Contact Center Transformation for a total of eight years, culminating in being named Mentor of the Year by the company in 2025. The following year, he launched his own business, STX.AI.

Wielding his expertise in AI strategy, technology thought leadership, startup support and innovation, and technology-to-business translation, Mr. Butterfield has excelled as the founder of a boutique consultancy aimed at helping tech startups to optimize market positioning and operational efficiency. In this capacity, he spends time collaborating with client organizations, many of which are Fortune 500, and providing clarity, direction, and practical leadership to those embracing and utilizing modern AI. Among his numerous responsibilities, he lays project timelines, gathers requirements, coordinates with third-party vendors, and conducts demonstrations of AI technology capabilities. In addition, he is involved in project and program management, creating and maintaining AI adoption plans, rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise across organizations, and translating complex technology and business problems to determine effective solutions, among others.

Focused primarily on the human aspects of technology, Mr. Butterfield strives in the next five to 10 years to actively major businesses and global leaders to raise awareness of the social implications of democratizing AI and its impact on job automation. As more jobs are eliminated due to the technology, he believes it is crucial to work with clients to ensure they use AI for positive purposes, specifically to grow their business rather than just cut costs. He aims to help companies create processes that allow them to thrive, by making the most of their workforce rather than reducing it. By aiming to augment human capabilities with technology through STX.AI, Mr. Butterfield is committed to advocating for employee happiness over company profits, promoting the idea of a 20-to-30-hour workweek, and questioning why society continues to overwork itself when technology can handle much of the workload. His vision is to uplift the broader population rather than just enrich the wealthy, a movement he hopes to become a prominent voice for in the future.

Outside of work responsibilities, Mr. Butterfield is a father of two and enjoys spending time with them, traveling with his family, and volunteering for numerous charities and causes.
