Shen Periyasamy, MD, Medical Advisor at Global Excel Management Inc., has been recognized as a Marquis Emerging Leader for their contributions and achievements in the field of medicine.

Wielding expertise in medical risk analysis and aviation medicine, Dr. Periyasamy found success for five years as a medical case manager at Active Care Management before becoming a medical adviser for Global Excel Management Inc.—a global healthcare risk management solutions provider—where he has excelled since 2020. In this role, he has become integral in creating infrastructures in the industry and handling medical risks.

Dr. Periyasamy earned his high school diploma from the American School of Kuwait in 2006 and subsequently relocated to Canada, where he attained a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and molecular biology from Western University in 2010. Despite this credential, he was forced to work blue-collar jobs, from stamping press to picking tomatoes. He had a passion for medicine, however, and ultimately matched into a residency program in the United States and pursued a medical degree. Staying on course with his aspirations of starting a medical practice, he had to abruptly leave school in 2016 to help care for his father, who suffered a stroke, as well as support his wife and son, who were both emotionally and financially struggling at the time. during this period, he worked several interim jobs unrelated to his field out of necessity, until he landed his role at Active Care Management.

His decision to enter the health care insurance field provided a work-life balance he sought as the father of two young children. He also strived to “shed some light” on the advantages of having insurance despite the industry’s negative reputation. Upon joining Global Excel, he managed to support and take care of his family and continue his education: he earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Avalon University School of Medicine in 2022. In addition, he has also accrued certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support from the American Heart Association and a lifeguard certificate from the Canadian Red Cross.

In 2012 or 2016, Dr. Periyasamy admits he never would have imagined he’d achieve his dream profession as he now has. Guided by passion, he has accomplished his goals while also keeping his family his top priority. “Life does not always have to be a compromise,” he said. “Chase your passions and stay true to yourself and life will work out.” He hopes that his story will provide hope to others who may feel disheartened about current work and life struggles and encourage them to keep their head up, saying “Opportunities will always come to those who stay on course.”

Looking toward the future, Dr. Periyasamy strives to continue to grow in his industry, ultimately combining insurance and public health. Believing that “every human deserves health care,” he aspires to educate people more about the importance of having insurance and obtaining adequate health care. He attributes his success to his network of teachers and mentors, as well as his determination throughout his career: every obstacle he overcomes, he noted, makes him stronger.
