Laura Latey Bradford, MD, PhD, Family Physician at the University of Maryland Capital Region Health, has been recognized as a Marquis Emerging Leader for their contributions and achievements in the field of medicine.

Growing up, Dr. Bradford had a strong foundation at home, especially from her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose unwavering support and encouragement that she could accomplish anything she set her mind to fostered her future success. She was introduced to the fields of research as early as middle school and ultimately gravitated toward this career in order to help people and better their lives.  She took part in a summer program for underrepresented minorities in the sciences, which provided firsthand experience with the role of physician-scientists and valuable mentorship in STEM, leading to an eventual bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Dr. Bradford later attained a PhD in microbiology and immunology and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

While pursuing these degrees, Dr. Bradford served as a research intern at the Hospital for Sick Children, Merck & Co., Inc., and the University of Maryland. She eventually returned to her alma mater through a residency in family medicine and a chief residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center. This has all culminated in her current role at the UM Capital Region Health Medical Group, where she’s been active as a member of the core faculty in family medicine since 2022. In this position, she has greatly contributed to the medical field by effectively combining clinical practice with a devoted clinical research career; her research focuses on identifying ways to enhance prenatal and postpartum care for women of color, with a special emphasis on reducing health disparities related to African-American maternal health—which is expected to have a significant impact on improving the health outcomes of women from diverse backgrounds.

In 2024, Dr. Bradford was selected to participate as a New Faculty Scholar for the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, which is awarded to early-career physicians showing great potential for leadership in family medicine. It’s a professional development opportunity to continue perfecting her skill and craft of teaching and how to advance in her career as a leader through workshops, seminars, and mentorship programs. Always connected to her field, she’s a dedicated member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Maryland Academy of Family Physicians, and Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Bradford has a clear vision of her professional trajectory for the next five years—she plans to stay in clinical medicine continuing to lead efforts to improve the quality and experience in resident education. In addition, she envisions herself pivoting from medical education to public health leadership, driven by her passion for driving change at the local or state level of public health organizations.
