John M. Currin, PhD, Strategic Planner at Gemini Industries, has been recognized as a Marquis Emerging Leader for their contributions and achievements in the fields of education and research.
Ever since he was a child, Dr. Currin has been captivated by history and historical research. Extremely fascinated by the reign of Henry VII early on, he subsequently delved into the subject of Tudor diplomacy and developed a passion for shedding light on overlooked subjects and “redefining the existing historical understanding.”
This passion led to a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Arizona and a master’s degree from Arizona State University, followed by a career as a historian and early teaching and researching positions at the University of Minnesota, where he taught history from 1991 to 1995, and the University of London. Upon obtaining a PhD in 1995, he excelled as an adjunct professor of history at Mankato State University, a senior lecturer of history at the University of Mary Washington, a visiting tutor in history at Plater College in the United Kingdom, an invited professor at Tecnologico de Monterrey in Mexico, an administrator at the Phoenix Institute, and an adjunct professor at Glendale Community College. He not only taught and conducted research but authored numerous academic articles and essays for major publications. In particular, his extensive research on Henry VII of England and his foreign policy changed many historian’s views about the historical figure, even being cited in a chapter of thew book “Tudor Empire” by David Wildman.
While between academic positions, Dr. Currin was contacted by a colleague with an offer to work at the White House. Matthew Scully, the then-Deputy Director for Speechwriting for President George W. Bush informed him that the Commander-in-Chief wanted to establish a fact-checking department. Impressed with his credentials, Scully recommended him for the job: he served as the Director of Fact-checking for the Executive Office of the President from 2003 to 2006. Following this appointment, he was asked to join the Pentagon’s efforts to reorganize its legislative affairs department and served as the Special Assistant for Congressional Research and the Director of the Legislative Support Team for the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs from 2006 to 2009.
He then found success working across several companies, including Cubic Applications, Inc., Special Applications Group, and Vistra Communications. Since 2020, he has excelled as the strategic planner of communication synchronization for Gemini Industries, a provider of technical and management services to government agencies and defense and aviation sectors through which he reviews diplomatic cables and intelligence reports; attends planning meetings; leads working groups; and often travels to the Middle East and Europe.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Currin intends to continue writing. He’s eager to write two books about Henry VII that utilize his past research. He previously compiled his research into a comprehensive narrative, as suggested by a friend of his at Oxford University, who often used Dr. Currin’s research in his work, which he believed would be valuable for a book. He eventually plans to retire in a few years.
