Nesrin Lesley Fields, Mathematics Educator at Killeen ISD, has been recognized as a Marquis Emerging Leader for their contributions and achievements in the field of education.

Born and raised in Turkey, Ms. Fields grew up in a culturally layered family—her mother was of Turkish and Greek heritage and her father had a Swiss-Turkey background. She was raised within a multilingual and cross-cultural environment, through which she developed early awareness of identity, language, and belonging across national traditions. It ultimately shaped her global-oriented professional journey, including her military career as a linguist and as an impactful educator later on.

Ms. Fields, from an early age, was drawn to the United States. Even before gaining fluency in English, she memorized the melody of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” later recalling that she experienced an affinity she could not yet fully articulate. Wielding a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Dokuz Eylül University, she realized she aspired for more. She eventually left behind material security in her country to pursue opportunity and purpose in the United States, officially immigrating in 2009. While fluent in multiple languages—including Turkish, Spanish, French, Russian, and German—she still had limited English proficiency. Yet, she memorized and absorbed the Soldier’s Creed of the U.S. Army—its declaration of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage—and devoted herself to military service by enlisting in 2010.

For four years, Ms. Fields served as a cryptological linguist in the Army, during which time she worked with multinational intelligence and special operations teams in high-stakes environments to ensure U.S. safety and bolster global missions. She earned numerous recognitions, bookended by First Place in the U.S. Army 5K at the Future Soldier Expo in Seattle and a Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal in 2014. Concurrently with her service, since 2010, she has been active as a freelance online interpreter and linguistic consultant—providing written translation, interpretation, and real-time interpretation in German, Italian, Turkish, and Azerbaijani for documents, reports, contracts, academic materials, and more—and an online math tutor and academic coach for students worldwide through tools like Khan Academy, Google Classroom, and Zoom.

After the Army, Ms. Fields established herself in the education field further by joining the staff at Killeen independent School District in Texas, initially as an online math instructor from 2015 to 2019 and then became a full-time math teacher starting in 2021. Since then, she has also taught at Live Oak Ridge Middle School and NYOS Charter School between 2021 and 2025. She has been most proud of her ability to change her students’ perception of mathematics, utilizing her approach to the subject as structured practice, persistence, and willingness to confront difficulty directly. By eliminating the intimidation factor that often comes with math; students who once viewed math as inaccessible have gone onto achieve things they never thought were possible, including perfect assessment scores, which, in turn, builds up their self-perception.

Over the course of her career in the United States, amid her numerous responsibilities, Ms. Fields continually bolstered her own education, starting with an Associate of Arts and Sciences in linguistics from Central Texas College in 2014. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Grand Canyon University, graduating summa cum laude in 2021, a Master of Arts in secondary education and teaching from Texas A&M University in 2023, and later returned to Grand Canyon, where she attained a master’s in mathematics and statistics and again graduated summa cum laude.

Looking toward the future, Ms. Fields aspires to maintain her educational journey with the pursuit of a doctoral degree in mathematics. Motivated by her husband of 13 years, Andre, an Army veteran himself who attained his degree and works as an assistant principal at a high school, she is determined to succeed and confident in her ability to achieve this goal. Additionally, she recently earned certifications in human rights education and consultancy through the U.S. Institute of Diplomacy and Human Rights, with which she wants to travel extensively to different countries and engage with global issues. She wants to continue making a meaningful difference on a larger scale, underscoring her commitment to promoting human rights worldwide.

In her spare time, Ms. Fields values spending time with her husband and their daughter, as well as contributing to initiatives supporting wounded veterans and military families.
