James O. Bunn III, Esq., Attorney at Jackson Kelly PLLC, has been recognized as a Marquis Emerging Leader for their contributions and achievements in the field of law.
Growing up in Virginia, Mr. Bunn came from a generations-spanning coal-mining family. After years in the industry, his father witnessed firsthand the volatility of the market and challenges posed by external factors such as shifting regulations and the varying degrees of enforcement by different administrations and agencies in Washington, D.C. Concerned about the instability and risk in this line of work, he encouraged his son to pursue a more service-oriented profession. As a result, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Alabama and then pursued a law degree at West Virginia University, which he ultimately attained in 2022.
Mr. Bunn first gained work experience as a law clerk with the Mitchell Law Firm in 2020, during which time he played an integral role in the reopening of a hospital in a rural area in Appalachia. The community had gone without a hospital for nearly seven years, but he and others helped to restore health care access to the region, making a lasting impact in the process, which he considers one of his proudest career moments.
Focused on transactional and corporate law, Mr. Bunn aims to support businesses of all sizes and help them grow. An associate at Bailey & Glasser, LLP for two years—finding his voice in litigating civil defense, commercial, and consumer protection cases—he’s been active at Jackson Kelly PLLC in Charleston, West Virginia, since 2024. Among his numerous roles, his work involves assisting individuals in establishing securities or investment firms while conducting regulatory research to ensure compliance with the FEC regulations. In addition, he maintains a membership with the West Virginia Bar Association.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Bunn strives to advance his career, build momentum, and become a more accomplished and capable attorney, particularly in business-related legal matters. His main professional goal is to advance to partner at a law firm within five years. Beyond these endeavors, he’s deeply committed to giving back to the Appalachian region, where he hopes to utilize his skills to improve business, quality of life, and education.
His dedication to service is further reflected in his current volunteer work as an assistant coach for a high school lacrosse team.
