Since 2021, Mr. Galvan has excelled as an infection preventionist at Tampa General Hospital, a 1,041-bed nonprofit medical center with state-of-the-art programs, and serves an award-winning team of 10 infection preventionists. With a background in medical technology and clinical microbiology, he specializes in identifying and implementing processes that control and prevent pathways for transmission of disease—through which he works alongside several types of health care professionals, from direct care providers to hospital administration—and assists in creating standards, policies, and procedures within his field. Among his myriad responsibilities, he serves as a subject matter expert for assigned units, interdisciplinary workgroups, and hospital committees; helps prepare and present education and in-service programs; and investigates a wide range of infections and participates in impactful research. Most notably, Mr. Galvan chairs the hospital’s high-level disinfection committee, focusing on developing and maintaining a safe reprocessing program for reusable medical devices across the enterprise.

In 2022, he created Your IP Companion, a website that serves as a “one-stop” resource for infection preventionists and those looking to pursue a career—from general information to educational opportunities.

Prior to these appointments, Mr. Galvan was active as an infection prevention coordinator at Ocseola Regional Medical Center, C-HCA, Inc. from 2020 to 2021 and an infection preventionist at Advocate Aurora Health from 2018 to 2020. He was a medical technologist in the clinical microbiology department at Northwestern Memorial Hospital from 2015 to 2018 after launching his health care career as an intern in medical technology at East Jefferson General Hospital in 2015. He earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Louisiana State University and a Bachelor of Science in clinical laboratory science from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and is currently pursuing a Master of Public Health in infection control at the University of South Florida.

Outside of his primary responsibilities, Mr. Galvan has served on a number of committees and has built a name for himself as a renowned and inspiring author and presenter in the field. In recognition of his contributions, he proudly received the inaugural Emerging Leader in Infection Prevention Award from the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology in 2021. He holds memberships with the Florida Professionals in Infection Control, American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, Infectious Diseases Society of America, and Florida Association for Healthcare Quality. Looking toward the future, Mr. Galvan strives to become even more involved and diversify his profession.
